When the Courts Go Dark, the Country Has a Crisis.

On 11 August 2026, the Court Services Council issued a public notice announcing that the Offices of the Supreme Court in Nassau would close with immediate effect because of power outages. The notice stated that the Supreme Court would reopen at 9:00 a.m. on 12 August 2026. Persons with matters scheduled for court were asked to report to their respective court on 12 August to obtain new adjourned dates.

This closure must be treated as more than an inconvenience. When power outages force the Supreme Court's offices to close, the country is confronting a serious warning about planning, maintenance and accountability. Recent documented power disruptions have affected households, businesses and public services; this notice shows how unreliable electricity can also interrupt the administration of justice.

The Coalition of Independents calls for clear answers, urgent corrective action and transparent accountability. Bahamians deserve reliable power and public institutions that can continue serving them when they are needed most.
